Ski-Tunnel is stabilized with soil – and insulated
On the job site of the biathlon-ski-tunnel in Russian Khanty-
Mansiysk the steel pipes disappear under soil rapidly. At a later
date, a snowboard-piste will be crossing over. However, this is only
one reason for the soil movements. By filling up, experts talk about
“backfilling”, the light steel construction is highly stabilized to take
up enormeous loads. And the soil even accomplishes more.
During backfilling the construction companies must proceed methodically.
Workmen fill the sides of the section layer by layer. The layers are compacted
in accordance with a specified scheme. Thus a very flexible large tube made of
corrugated steel becomes a strong pipe, which not only widthstands snowboarder.
In the original field of application of the corrugated steel pipes – e.g. road under-
passes under railway tracks – the stabilized steel constructions even carry complete
trains. With the Russian summer-ski-tunnel this type of construction proves its
superiority even more. Because the soil is well-insulated, it is comparatively easy
to keep optimum temperature for skiing tracks in the tunnel with the provision of
artificial snow in the summer. Less additional insulating material under construction,
less energy consumption in service – these are the consequences.

Layer by layer the
steel-pipe structures are
“backfilled” with soil, as
referred to by experts. This
is clearly to be seen at the
bend line, which seems to
to be directed to the biathlon-
stadium of Khanty Mansiyks.
In the final stage the tunnel is
directed in a right-hand bend to
the entrance hall of the summer
ski-tunnel.

|
The same construction stage, the same
section, however, viewed from the
opposite direction, leading to the
reversing track loop of the summer-
biathlon-stadium. Just barely to be seen
is the the transverse large connecting
tunnel at the upper end between the
two pipes.
|
 |
|
After backfillling the track section is
completely covered – and, moreover,
the plane surface shows that compaction
was made here. Also, clearly visible at this
point is the uphill section the biathletes
come across at this point.

 |
|
While he first sections re already
“backfilled”, the assembly of the
remaining ski-tunnel continues in
parallel – here at the (provisional)
end of the line in direction reversing
track loop.

|
A further section in the area of the
ski-tunnel under construction. This is
a place, where one of the three smaller
escape tunnels will come out of the section
and where also one of six small connect-
ing tunnels is installed between the pipes.
They are part of a sophisticated escape
routing scheme of the facility.

Multi-purpose facility Middle East :
The first plans are available
The multi-function facility in a Near East state is taking shape. The first planning sketches are available - two kilometer track, at times through a shopping mall. Those are the ambitious plans. More on this...
Curling facilities Finland:
Stones slide on the ice in summer as well
In Finland curling will be possible shortly also outside of ice rinks during summer. This is done with a compact, easily to be cooled corrugated steel structure of Hamco. More on this...

Corrugated steel:
Proven construction
For the construction of tunnels and underpasses they show their advantages - fast on site, quick loadability. Our Hamco profiles: Naturally steel. More on this... |
